elmat: not many places left in the US where they deliver milk to your home... just as there are very few doctors who make house calls now -- both activities that were quite common when I was a boy, but have since virtually disappeared.

I think electric is only one piece of the puzzle we'll need in the future... but there is some inefficiency to it if you think about it: energy lost during electrical generation and transmission, and more lost when converted to kinetic energy via vehicle motors...

Might be better to simply use ng to power the vehicle -- not nearly as much engineering needed since it is so similar to what we do now, and there's better chances for incremental improvements in efficiency.

Also, the best electric storage device at the moment appears to be lithium ion batteries. They have some issues (remember laptop fires?), including the fact that producing it is a very intense and dirty business and at the end of the battery's life, you don't want to just throw it into a landfill.

I think we need a big tech breakthrough in batter technology before all electric really becomes a desirable option... but that's my opinion and I could be very wrong -- i.e., they've already doubled the capacity and efficiency of lithium ion batters.
