A minor point - The is a little bit of apples and oranges here. The Acura TL is a 4 door 4 passenger "luxury" vehicle (according to Wikipedia) that has real tires.

The EV1 was a two passenger vehicle with very skinny tires that don't do curves well. The Acura has about twice the interior volume of the EV1.

A better conventional comparison would be the Toyota Yaris, which gets around 34 mpg city.

A Toyota Prius in plug in electric vehicle mode would be a better comparison. (The Yaris was the basis of the early model Prius, the newer Prius is much more a separate model.

The electric is still much more efficient, but the difference is closer to 2:1 instead of almost 3:1

The EV1 was a long time ago, and we can expect electric vehicles to make more progress than IC powered vehicles.
