Skeet, not sure if anyone posted this, and if someone did I'm sure you wouldn't mind reading it again....
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The 16-megabit DRAM market has become a money-losing business, but some memory makers are still able to squeeze out a profit in special niches.
Prices for a 16-Mbit DRAM on the spot market here dropped to below $4.00 this week, from $4.10 and above last week, according to a DRAM broker in Taiwan.
''I have 16-Mbit parts that sell for $3.85, but there's are no buyers out there,'' lamented the broker said. ''Everybody is a loser in the DRAM market right now. The more products vendors make, the more money they lose.''
There are some exceptions to the rule. Believe it or not, specialty-memories suppliers like Taiwan's Mosel-Vitelic Inc. is making a small profit on 4-Mbit DRAMs by selling them at about $2.50 a unit, the broker said.
''Mosel-Vitelic is one of the few vendors that's still selling 4-Mbit parts--everybody else has gotten out of the business,'' he added.
