From Next Generation:

Could EA Acquire
Activision?

October 31, 1997

A recent rumor that's been doing the industry
rounds for the past week was that Activision was to
be EA's next acquisition. Next Generation Online
explores.

Roughly a week ago, Next Generation Online first heard that EA
was trying to acquire Activision. The editors didn't really pay the
rumor much mind, but the given frequency that the editors kept
hearing it and the fact that it turned up at so many different sources
that it needed to be checked further.

In speaking with a representative of Activision, the company
offered a "no comment" when asked to offer insights into the
possibility of Electronic Arts purchasing the company. Electronic
Arts was similarly coy stating: "We don't offer comments on
industry rumors."

Sources at EA have indicated that there have been lawyers literally
running from place to place in the last week, but none of the
sources knew exactly why. Bear in mind that EA is also rumored
to have its sights set upon Virgin and a number of other companies
as potential acquisitions so the lawyer activity could be attributed
to any number of reasons.

In the face of recent mergers between GT Interactive and
Microprose, the bigger publishers and developers seem to be
getting only more so. The possibility of Activision being purchased
by another company only seems to reinforce this trend of
consolidation. Oddly enough, Activision has undergone massive
growth in the past few years. Some sources within the company
would even describe the company's resurgence as 'uncontrolled
growth' which may have resulted in the company not operating as
efficiently as it could have. The acquisition of Activision by another
company could well correct some of the inefficiencies that come as
the result of such growth.
