The video phone product from Intel includes either an Analog Video Camera and a plug-in video capture card. Or, if your computer has a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port, a Digital Video Camera and a cable to plug directly into the USB port. A software package is also included which handles compression of the image as well as audio compression.
This software package is an upgrade to a piece of software that major OEMs (HP, Compaq, Dell, etc.) ship with their Pentium systems.

Because of the slow speed of data transmission using a modem, the video and audio images need to be compressed to reduce their size so they can be more quickly transmitted at the limited speed of modems.

At the receiving end, these compressed images must be decompressed.

Thus, a faster CPU will perform these functions (Compression and Decompression) quicker than a slow one, giving a more realistic impression of actual video.
