SAN FRANCISCO—Semiconductor manufacturing equipment vendor Brooks Automation Inc. said Thursday (Oct. 15) it now expects revenue for the quarter ended Sept. 30 to be about $64 million, up roughly 45 percent from the previous quarter.

Brooks (Chelmsford, Mass.), which makes automation equipment used in chip fabs, had previously forecast that revenue would be up about 25 percent sequentially.

"A sharp upturn in requirements from our semiconductor OEM accounts throughout the world gained momentum as the quarter progressed," said Robert Lepofsky, Brooks president and CEO, in a statement.

Lepofsky said the trend has continued since the quarter closed and that Brooks is presently anticipating revenue growth of at least another 45 percent for the current quarter, which closes Dec. 31.

Semiconductor equipment suppliers as a group have been hit hardest by the current downturn. While chip vendors have in recent weeks reported stronger earnings and given encouraging forecasts, there is fear that gear suppliers will continue to struggle into next year.

The fab automation sector has been hit perhaps as hard as any in the equipment realm. Brooks' main U.S. rival, Asyst Technologies Inc., filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year.
