"False statement" != "lie". Lie implies intentional deception.

But I will give you this much. Many false statements, believed by those who repeat them, where originally lies. If someone lies, and you repeat the false statement, then it could be said that your spreading a lie, even though you are not lying. The intentional deception here is the original lie, it doesn't have to be intentional by everyone down the line.
