I agree. I always afford the benefit of the doubt when using the L word. Which is why I offered an example that was conspicuously false and for which no reasonable case for truth could be made and where the benefit of lying is obvious. I won't use the L word when there is reasonable doubt. Like you, I avoid attributing motivations unless it's a slam dunk.
