They have meanings for me as well. But I have learned the hard way that most people just don't care. Most people are quite binary. They're content to find a word that correctly represents their positive or negative attitude. A specific positive or negative attitude is too much to expect. Although I disapprove of verbal sloppiness, I recognize the reality, which is why I suggest you may be making too much over the left's use of "lie." Just because that or any word has meaning to you doesn't mean that it has meaning for others using it. Not to mention the unlike, let alone the same meaning.

Having used "treason" hyperbolically and "bastard" randomly yourself, you can see how "lie" might not be used as precisely as you might expect.
