I only asked because I'm a skier too, and have been for 37 years. Of course the only people who wore helmets when I started were racers and Olympic contestants, but then people started paying attention to the stories of other people wearing helmets when they ski. And then I started seeing people on the slopes wearing them, and I didn't think they looked bad (that is the excuse most who don't wear them use.........."I'd look like a geek, or girlyman or??? dozens of other excuses.)

What convinced me to buy a helmet was fortunate for me.

I was visiting a friend in Aspen and noticed she wore a helmet. I told her I'd never worn one, and could I borrow her spare. I skied for the next four days wearing that helmet. It kept my head warm and was a convenient place to park my goggles.

I still hadn't decided whether I was going to buy one or not until my very last run of the very last day of skiing.

I was alone...........just needed to take that last run before I left for home the next day.........and really flying down one of the runs on Aspen Mt. Not being familiar and giving that absolutely no thought, I found myself flying (literally) through the air (I'd just crossed an unmarked cat trail.)

I hit the ground very hard with my right shoulder and right hip and the next thing to hit the ground was my head. My head bounced off of the snow and hit again. Thankfully, I'm pretty loose jointed, and I wasn't hurt......much.......but was I ever glad I was wearing that helmet. It took the brunt of the impact and I have no doubt it prevented serious injury.

I haven't skied without a helmet since.
