Remember when "bastard" was popular?

I still use this term daily, and you're exactly right -- I use it as a generic insult. My bad, I admit.

Bastard has been used long enough, by enough people, as a generic insult, that its pretty much an alternate definition of the word now.

It even gets included in dictionaries, sometimes with comments about it being slang or informal, but sometimes without as its common enough now to drop those qualifiers.

That hasn't happened with "lie". Not even to the point where its considered slang or informal use.
