US Patents, I believe, have a 17 year term from the point they are issued, not just applied for. Companies will sometimes drag out the application process to get a little extra time. Therefore, it's extremely unlikely that any IDX patents are expiring any time soon. When a patent expires, the exclusive right to use (or license) the technology expires with it. By then, we hope, IDX is so established as the top biometric company that this will be a nonevent.
