Sounds like an interesting family dynamic

A dynamic that wasn't always understood by visitors (which is probably true of a lot of families).

We were 6 kids about 2 years apart, sports oriented, and very competitive, especially among ourselves.

The "gotcha" part was something that is still going on to this day. I'll give you another idea of that - on the order of the mass exodus.

One Christmas, we were all assembled in the back den getting ready to leave with all our packages covering the floor. (We were all parked in the back driveway.

I had given my mother a 2-foot high nutcracker of a drummer boy. She collected nutcrackers. My older sister took the nutcracker and put it in one of my bags and then went and told my mother that I had stolen it. This sent my mother in orbit and she started raging at me calling me a thief. I knew immediately which sister was responsible and saw her trying to keep a straight face while my mother was chewing me out.

We ended up laughing hysterically because she'd pulled off a good one. The other sibs were laughing too because it was a good gotcha. Neither of my sister's husbands understood - one even got a little peeved at her for getting me in trouble. I didn't care - it was pretty funny at the time.
