Interesting that there are several here who had a strong, influential parent and the other parent was less than ideal. I share the same situation, although on my side, it was my mother who made the family - putting on outstanding birthday parties when we were kids, taking us on cross-country camping trips and generally making childhood special. My father on the other hand was aloof and not involved in his kids' lives, and had a nasty temper to boot. Now that he has grandkids he can't even manage to remember my kids on their birthdays or at Christmas. That caused me a lot of anger until I let it go.

My mother is gone now and I've made my peace with my father.
