Making the peace is the important part. Otherwise it just eats you up. I was very upset with my mother for some years both for things she did and also for not protecting my brother and I from Stepfather. My dad was wonderful but 90 miles away and we only saw him once a month. But later on I decided I would remember the good times and there were plenty of those also and push the bad aside. Made for a much more pleasant life. Also it allowed me to not hate my mother which would have been a real guilt trip now with her dying and would have likely haunted me for the remainder of my life.
