I gave up trading options several years ago simply because of the ridiculous spreads. I did fairly well for a while, in a bull market, with OEX options. But, when the bull ended, so did my run. About 3 years ago I switched to the S&P eMini futures contracts. Using simple TA, I've done pretty well, once again, until I stopped doing pretty well. I'm in a holding pattern right now and just watching. Borderline gambling, prolly.
