<"Should the government pay for anything?",> Yes, it's messy. I can imagine myself supporting a government minimum (bare bones) health care... but who's going to support that? They you've got endless arguments about 'poor people' get this government plan... rich people get the gold plated one... blahhh blahhh Personally I'm not a big fan of what "modern medicine" has become anyway... but that's another issue.
