I'm watching Modern Marvels on the History Channel. They just did a segment on the format wars between Sony, with it's Betamax and JVC (Matsushita?) with the VHS format. Among other things, the show makes the point was what stuck the knife in the Betamax was the adoption of the VHS format by the porn industry for publishing its "art."

Interesting bit of tech history right there.
