Right... so (it seems) the overriding issue would be where DO we want the government to be involved. It seems we need a 'formost principle' or something like "what do we want, as a people, to provide each other" before any other considerations? We have a great general framework, but where the rubber meets the road there is clearly a wide array of differences into what that all should include.

Someone decided at some point for example that education was something that needed to be regulated in various ways to insure minimal standards. Still futzing and feuding over that one.
