If the distortions are intended to deceive the audience then I would qualify them as lies.

I don't know what distortions you are talking about but under that qualification, I would label a distortion a lie.

If its an obvious thing that no reasonable person would be deceived by, it would not be a lie. Jokes, magic tricks, satire, fiction novels, exaggeration for dramatic effect, etc are obvious distortions and are not intended to deceive reasonable persons.
