The story was probably started by a religious fanatic confusing a bad dream with reality and then used to accuse innocent people they did not like or were simply jealous of.

Imaginations have a way of rubbing off on simpletons.

As far as the Roman Church bolstering things they would use anything to further their cause including making everyone guilty by inventing original sin.
