Where is the E-Reader Revolution Leading Us?

One of the more interesting things to speculate about is the future of public libraries. I simply could not live without access to a public library that, in turn, has access to all the holdings of all the libraries in Bergen County (NE New Jersey) and some libraries from surrounding counties.

But e-books raise more than a few questions about how public libraries might handle them. Do they buy e-book readers, install a book on one when a reader asks for it and have it time limited? Do they let patrons download e-books to their own e-book readers in some sort of time limited arrangement? Do they preserve the fiction of only holding so many copies? Do public libraries eventually become larger computer servers for digitized books, newspapers, magazines, music, dvds, etc.?

What happens to public funding of such with municipalities terribly strapped for funding?

And so on.
