I think it was Pope Montague. He used to hang out around the Good Shepherd on Jarvis in the seventies selling thing to the drifters. I believe he called his religion the Righteousness of Self. He proclaimed best after a fifth of the good stuff and in that enlightened state uplifted many a kindred spirit to the rarer atmospheres of reason and conscience with his inveterate, spirited preaching of the ways of the higher power, set to the music of clanging lids of dust bins and bottles as he rummaged for cigarettes and things of worth to his lifestyle in the alleyways of Gotham. He had evidently renounced worldly wealth, adorning himself with cast off raiment. I thought of him as a modern day Diogenes, whose baleful gaze could penetrate one's soul to its very core of truth. The essence of a man could not escape his instant assessment and religious pronouncements in fluent imprecations from the old testament denouncing hypocrisy, mammon and falsity of pretensions to station. Surely this is the arbiter of society and its conscience, a touchstone of purity of purpose of the species.
