Just wanted to share this piece of information since I understand, through googling, that it seems to be a recurring problem with others.

I have a Dell 1400 laptop and upgraded to Windows 7. It was a flawless installation. The one problem I was having was that the keyboard option to adjust screen brightness while on battery was not working.

If anyone else has this problem - and it extends beyond Dell to other brands from what I have seen on the net - the way to resolve it is by adjusting the video option on the bios. Once I did this, keyboard option to adjust screen brightness worked perfectly. The actual adjustment on the bios may vary depending on your computer. In the case of my Dell laptop, I had to increase the default brightness for the video to level 8 on the bios. Once I saved the change to the bios, the problem was solved.
