In fact, the new Medicare prescription drug benefit enacted in 2006 (Part D) alone adds some $17 trillion to the projected Medicare shortfall - an amount greater than all of Social Security's unfunded obligations.

It wasn't enacted in 2006, for openers.

You might not have noticed, but the unfunded liability for Part D is actually DECREASING, not INCREASING as the others are. Over time, if left alone, it would decrease substantially from where it is now (I seriously doubt the liberals are going to leave it alone) because it wasn't THEIR idea and, frankly, it just works too well for your tastes.

If the program continues to work as well as it has since its inception, the unfunded liability related to it will continue to decline to a point where it is totally acceptable (low single-digits).

It has a cost associated with it and I have never said I approved of that. However, if you're going to have government involved in the health care business it is the correct way to do it.
