Exactly so. In fact, my son says the engineers are not the problem, accountants are. He works for a company called Hunter Engineering.

So how come a refrigerator that my family has had for fifty years still ran when we replaced it, albeit inefficiently?

I'll be surprised if the new one lasts ten years.

The accountants have demanded that things not last, and the engineers are good enough to build that feature in.

Accountants, not engineers.
