I think your description of Cohen is very good. The man does smile, however. In "I'm your man", instead of "I'll wear a mask for you", he sung "I'll wear an old man's mask for you" - while taking off the hat and sticking forward his laughing face. T'was fun. He had the audience laughing several times. He recited a version of "A thousand kisses deep" starting with: "You came to me this morning, and handled me... like meat. You have to be a man to know how nice that felt, how sweet" (I may be off by a word or two; writing it down as I heard it).
