I've read some about the new Urban Pioneers in Detroit. However, you'd have to have a strong tolerance for crime and would have to be very self-sufficient. Detroit has never been my kind of place, even though I spent a fair amount of time there in the 1980s when I was at DOJ. At this point in my life, I wouldn't have the patience to try to carve out a place in the urban wasteland. You may or may not be aware of some of these sites.
