I really don't think you have any idea what smart grid technology is all about. There is no such thing as "incompatibility" unless you want to start merging electric utilities under a central planning agency.

Also think about this. As a Seattle resident, do you want your appliances shut off during times when Californians have their air conditioners at full blast?
