Not if the number 124 was fictitious and made up only to support a story about how expensive potatoes were.

The real "story" was that the grocery store was saved from bankruptcy and neighbors were able to continue buying groceries. The grocer was able to keep people working in his store. The potato farmers were paid keeping the banks from seizing their farms. Everybody paid their taxes totaling more than $3000 and everybody lived happily ever after.
