Not if the number 124 was fictitious and made up only to support a story about how expensive potatoes were.

So, then, if 124,000 is fictitious, how many clunker sales were there? What was the cost per car sold under the program?

The potato farmers were paid keeping the banks from seizing their farms.

The potato farmers get to keep their farms for a while, but for how long? Remember that there are a lot of potatoes in a lot of root sellers so they won't be buying any potatoes any time soon. The banks could be coming after them again any time now. So then what do you do? Pay them $24 per potato again? Let the banks have them? Or what?

I would not be arguing this point had the farms been saved rather than their loss just postponed.
