Ms. Scozzafava fit the model of candidate advocated by Republican leaders like Mr. Steele and Senator John Cornyn of Texas: one whose views might not be in keeping with much of the national party, but are more reflective of the district in question.

But that's not true in this case; that was just the problem. Ms Scozzafava is not a moderate Republican; she's liberal Democrat. She's more liberal than the Democratic candidate. Markos Moulitsa endorsed her. Nor is the 23rd a liberal district; it's a conservative district. Nor did Ms. Scozzafava win a primary contest to test the sentiments of the district; she was appointed. Every reason which usually applies to argue against supporting a third party candidate is not applicable in this case, except pure deference to local authority no matter what boneheaded stunts they pull, which is what New Gingrich has been reduced to arguing.
