The US mission is to deter the militant Islamists. The problem in a nutshell. The mission is ambiguously defined, if at all. When it first started, it was to get Bin Laden and take out the Taliban as the rulers of Afghanistan. Most of the original mission has been completed. The remaining mission can be performed on the cheap as there is no need for a vast and expensive military infrastructure to hunt OBL. As far as I can tell, it would be relatively easy to prevent the Taliban from taking over again. We have added nation building to the mission, which is crazy.
