Look at these IDC numbers for Q2/97

IDC WW Total PC shipments Q2/97 by segement:

Dell Mkt shr
Total Dell opportunity
Business 11,345,934 860,818 92.41%
Government 1,201,607 78,474 93.47%
Education 923,285 51,324 94.44%

Home 4,945,689 >100,000 avoid

It's clear from these numbers that Dell has saturated
the Business market, there's no opportunity left and
they should compete head-to-head with Compaq for share
in the sub 1000 consumer segment <ggggg>

Seriously, can anybody give a logical reason as to
why Dell will get killed if they don't target the
Home user? Forget ASP pressure, it will be minimal
and positively offset by expansion across other product
lines.

By staying out of the cut throat, cheap PC retail
commodity business, Dell sends a CLEAR message to
their Business customers "Our focus is you". This
strategy will only accelerate further penetration
and market share gains in the business segment.

Yes, Dell's management is very wise. They will
continue to suprise to the upside quarter after
quarter.
