Surprised me a little . I think people wanted their own issues addressed and Hoffman was seen as a carpetbagger like you suggested.

On the other hand...Corzine was trounced and New Jersey is a poster state for Obama.

And Corzine was a corrupt incumbent in a year where people are mad at incumbents. Bloomberg spent over $100 million on his race and nearly lost. Corzine was behind double digits when the race started but in spite of that managed to make it a reasonably close race. And that's because the R running was only slightly less corrupt.
