One major reason Australia's economy is getting better sooner is that the Australian Reserve Bank stomped on their housing market while the U.S. and many other nations were running a credit bubble.

This effort was augmented by tripling property taxes on those individuals with total residential housing investments over a certain threshold to drive away speculators.

Australia also never followed the suicidal Ronald Reagan model and thus did not lower their progressive income tax rates.

As a consequence, Australia has no net government debt.
