"You're suffering the same delusions that Pelosi is."

No delusions, Tenchu. This has major impact on the way a party operates.

"It's only a matter of time before the Republicans figure out that "big tent" is a trap."

Trap it may be. But it is the only way for a party to have a national presence in a two party system. If you have a multi-party system, then your party can be "ideologically pure" and win influence from building coalitions between different parties. A two party system requires those coalitions to be built within the party. The Democrats have done this for a long while, and it is what Reagan tried to do with his "big tent". If the Republicans are ditching it, well, they will lose influence and elections on the national level.
