Sounds like physical is tighter for somebody - maybe some mine with a hedge book they need to close out - maybe before year end - told the bank they will $X over spot, and Hang Seng is willing to pay some percentage of X over spot and pocket the rest. You can sweep up a lot of gold with that premium. That's about a 5% premium ! Over a years' interest. Another possibility : Someone thinks there is going to be a war, and wants to load up on gold now. Some body is hitting the panic button.
