Michael Ashby Joins Ascend as Executive Vice President and CFO

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31,
1997--Ascend Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:ASND) announced today that Michael
Ashby, 48, has joined the company as executive vice
president and chief financial officer (CFO). He will report
to Ascend President and CEO Mory Ejabat and replace
Bob Dahl who will remain on as executive vice president
chief of planning. Ashby joins Ascend from Pacific Bell in
San Francisco where he was vice president and CFO. At
Ascend, he will be responsible for putting in place the
financial planning and control infrastructure that Ascend
requires to continue its rapid growth.
"Michael has exactly the combination of experience and
industry knowledge that makes him a good fit for
Ascend," said Ejabat. "He has worked both with rapidly
growing, entrepreneurial companies and with very large
companies. Michael will be able to implement the
systems, processes, and financial planning tools that
Ascend needs as we reach a new stage in our
development."
Ashby has over 20 years of financial management
experience. Two years ago, he became CFO of the
Pacific Telesis Enterprise Group. When Pacific Telesis, a
holding company which owned Pacific Bell, was acquired
by SBC, he became vice president and CFO of Pacific
Bell and its subsidiaries. Previously, Ashby spent three
years at Network Systems Corporation, initially as CFO
and subsequently as president and CEO. Ashby's
background also includes senior financial management
positions with Adidas and General Electric Company in
both Europe and the U.S.
Ashby is originally from England where he attended the
University of Leeds and the Institute of Cost and
Management Accountants in London.
