I too have never been impressed with Obama (last year was like staying sober in a room full of people getting s---faced drunk). My question has always been, how did Obama manage to fool so many really smart people into thinking that he was brilliant, had a first-class temperament to be President, was a sober centrist, etc and so forth? When I & countless others (but not enough, alas!) looked at him and said, how can you buy this shtick? This is a flim-flam artist, not a real leader!

I can only assume that he has a lot of intellectual wattage, but it is all focused quite narrowly toward what I would call the "snow-job" goal. He can charm, he can persuade, he can be whatever you need to him to be. It's all show, not substance; talk, not action. For governing he has to fall back on his left-wing ideology, which he doesn't even seem to have thought through in the way his mentor (I use the term advisedly) Bill Ayers ever did.

Maybe that's why Obama suddenly seems so tin-eared. The rules are different you are President. You can't just go out there and let the crowd tell you who you are supposed to be today. You have to know.
