That makes sense. Then if one or more climbed out the top and was in good shape and cold was not affecting his brain, he could have signaled the hoist-man via the cable (9 short??). If they were too deep to get to surface and perished, when cage was lifted it would cause turbulence, wash them into the other compartment or onto a level. We will have to wait for the investigation and/or inquest.

Tragic!

Errors were made, there are lessons to be learned, but not the end of the world for the company IMO.
