Yes, Air Force One is hardened, as are other vehicles and equipment designed to operate in a post-nuclear environment. But that doesn't include virtually ALL consumer grade electronic items. But, as I'm sure you know, the strength of an EMP is directly proportional to the square of the distance from the point source of the EMP. So, it is possible that even a B-2 bomber could be overwhelmed by EMP if it happened to be close enough to the explosion.

As a scenario to launch his story, I thought the EMP was as good a way to initiate a regression to the stone age as any. I thought the societal devolution was pretty well described. Like any model, it may not exactly predict what would happen, but the events are probably as likely to happen as not in such a situation.

But then, I enjoy "what-if" stories. <GGG>
