The most attractive of the wives, based on our standards, was Anne of Cleves.

Famous painter Hans Holbein was sent to Germany to paint a portrait so Henry VIII could see what she looked like. He painted a flattering picture of her, on which subsequent paintings were based.

Henry agreed to the match, 3D sight unseen. She had no idea what he looked like. When he entered the room on their first meeting, he had been out riding, smelled bad, and looked unkempt. She made a disparaging remark in German but it was clear she had insulted him. He returned the insult calling her a Flanders horse. She didn't look anything like the portrait that had been presented to Henry.
