Aye, and there's the rub. I can do that with movies, where someone else is doing all the work of my imagination with pictures, dialog inflection, etc. Not so in a book -- my mind gives a hiccup when the dots don't connect. I tried, unsuccessfully, several times to read The Lord of the Rings. I just couldn't get through it. When the movie came out, I enjoyed it a lot.

When I read a novel, it's like watching a movie in my head.
