Over the last 12 years or so we've had more and more raccoons in our neighborhood, and especially since the little old lady next door started throwing food off of her back deck. The critters around here all know she does it, so we get all kinds. We've had some development, and swaths of forest land have been taken out to accommodate new homes. Fortunately, we have one house per acre zoning, so the impact is smaller.

I feel sorry for them too, but I've also noticed we don't have nearly as many frogs and salamanders as we used to have, so they've found enough to eat but they are also disrupting the natural balance imo.

There is a lot of forest land surrounding us with ponds and streams and even a couple of good sized lakes. I'm sure they make a pretty good living.
