A connection is being made between him and Anwar Al-Alawki. Anwar is an American born Muslim with Yemeni heritage, who has become an Islamic scholar and has served as a popular Imam at Mosques from coast to coast in America. He was the Imam at the Virginia Mosque when it was attended by a young Hasan.

Anwar is charismatic and his speech has a strong appeal, especially to young Americans. That's partly due to his personality and partly due to the fact that he doesn't fall into the usual cultural traps that foriegn speakers do that would make him a target of mockery ... like when Ahmadenijad said there are no homosexuals in Iran. He is also very outspoken in support of global jihad and against the operations of the US military, especially over the last decade or so.

Anwar, who has an immense following, has proclaimed Hasan to be a hero and is encouraging others to view him as a role model. I knew Anwar personally when he was a student at Colorado State University, and visited with him when he was in Denver. He is a likable enough chap when just hanging out. I would not be surprised to see more incidents on the heals of this one.
