The issue IS that militant Islam MUST NOT BE PERMITTED to thwart progressive change within that religion by moderates.
Listen.. Christianity had it's "crusade" stage, although many would assert that the actual crusades were a defensive war fought to confront Muslim aggression over the course of several hundred years. In the hundreds of years prior to the actual crusades, kings and popes used religion as their authority to conquer and subjugate other non-christian people (especially pagan).
But that was NEVER the message of Jesus Christ, as recorded in the New Testament. Jesus never taught Christians to spread the faith "by the sword", but by faith and ideas.
But Islam is different. Muhammad was a believer in Jihad and subjugating people into Dhimmitude if they did not convert. And those who left the Islamic faith were killed as apostates and heretics.
We've seen, in recent years, the rise of a more moderate Islam, primarily within non-Arab Muslim adherents. They don't have the cultural history of the Arabs and Persians, which consisted of inter-tribal warfare or empire building (in the case of the Persians).
But the undercurrent of Militant Islam STILL exists. It exists in the writings of Sayyid Qutb, Ayman Zawahiri, and numerous Islamic clerics inciting their followers to wage aggressive and expansionist Jihad, as well as restoration of the Caliphate.
And these people have been teaching this, and recruiting followers for decades now. And we're seeing the outgrowth from those teachings in every Muslim country. Your wishing it away will not resolve the problem. Your asserting that we're causing the problem doesn't hold water either. It's existed for years.
Also, abandoning those moderate muslims, many of whom perceive Islam as a peaceful religion, and know little about its Jihadist origins, is to insure that Islam returns to it's aggressive and reactionary roots. That will GUARANTEE a clash of cultures which will cost the lives of millions of victims on each side. Restoration of the Caliphate DOES make militant Islam a global threat. Any idiot can review the history of Islam and it's relations with non-Islamic people to see what will result. Only by GREAT blood shed has the march of Muslim Jihad been stopped over the many centuries.
I want to avoid that. I want to avoid having our children engaged in that clash of cultures that your indifferent attitude to Muslim young people makes nearly inevitable.
Maybe we'll fail to accomplish that. But we'll expend a lot less blood and treasure trying to prevent the spread of militant Islam than we will by ultimately having to confront it as the evil force that it is. If we're not involved in those regions, providing alternative social options to the people, if only democratic reform that demands accountability to the people's needs, then we've condemned tens of millions of Muslims to the hands of the fanatics.
I know you don't believe that. Your obvious resistance against all obvious reason, historical evidence, and the current verbage these militants are using borders on blatant denial of the threat. But again, just because you lack the capability of perceiving that threat doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
And the rest of us don't have the time to wait for you to get your head out of you fourth point of contact. So we'll carry on without you..
