Have you thought about the Netbooks? They are cheaper and lighter. If most of your computer work is on the internet or in basic functions like MS Office, they might work for you.

Smaller keyboard, smaller screen are disadvantages, but if you can handle that they are much easier to take with, and are about half the cost.

I have one I got at Costco for $319.
