My oldest son and his wife home school their kids. There are some real advantages, but it is a never-ending chore for the mom to keep up the lessons even when other things demand her time.

The local schools don't much like the home school idea, and have collectively thrown up some real obstacles. They are almost forced to belong to an association of home schoolers just for the legal support. Laws vary from state to state, and there are some real horror stories out there of families broken up and parents wrongfully thrown in jail, all stemming from not wanting kids influenced by public schools.
