Much of this is sales talk, of course. They're solving very specific problems, like removing the need to reinstall servers (unless the base OS support expires of course), and the need to keep as many boxes running. Virtualization also solves one big problem: The need for more power. Many data centers today are actually using more power than they were designed for, which means that if the external power supply goes away, the emergency power supply may not always be able to supply enough power as a replacement.

However, the game _is_ changing, and Cisco is very good at reading it.
